Meteorological Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Forced Closure of Lithuanian Airport
Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
