Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such medications should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
