The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
